Creating Safer Spaces: Psychological Safety & Emotional First Aid
Assata Harris @ the Lab

Psychological safety and emotional first aid support our movement in building safer, more supportive, and more responsive group, team, and coalition spaces. This training will explore what psychological safety is, why it matters for trust, participation, learning, conflict navigation, and collective work, and how leaders and facilitators can strengthen it through clear norms, relational practices, power awareness, and repair. Additionally, we will introduce emotional first aid as a practical framework for responding when someone is activated, distressed, shut down, overwhelmed, or in conflict.

Through this training, participants will:

  • Learn how to recognize signs of emotional escalation and how to offer grounding and validation to reduce harm in the moment,

  • Understand and identify when additional support or boundaries are needed,

  • Identify the conditions that support psychological safety and name common barriers that undermine safety, and

  • Apply practical de-escalation, repair, and support strategies in meetings, campaigns, coalitions, and organizational spaces
