Webinar: Centering Equity in Climate Adaptation and Resilience –– with Asian Pacific Environmental Network and The Greenlining Institute

The Climate Advocacy Lab, Asian Pacific Environmental Network & The Greenlining Institute
11/18/19

"Rather than being viewed as victims to be protected and saved, vulnerable communities should instead define, develop, and drive the solutions." –Amee Raval quoting Pathways to Resilience: Transforming Cities in a Changing Climate (recording 00:44:20)

This conversation highlights findings from two reports focused on how the climate advocacy community can support equitable climate resilience (the ability of communities to adapt and thrive in the face of impacts from climate change) in climate policies and programs, as advocates nationwide are pushed to think beyond a frame of "simply" climate mitigation: Making Equity Real in Climate Adaptation and Community Resilience Policies and Programs: A Guidebook and Mapping Resilience: A Blueprint for Thriving in the Face of Climate Disasters.

Emerging from the California advocacy landscape, report authors and experts Amee Raval of Asian Pacific Environmental Network (APEN) and Sona Mohnot of The Greenlining Institute speak to:

  • Insights, frameworks, and tools that climate advocates nationwide can apply to integrating social equity considerations into advances in climate resiliency policies & programs (including mapping tools CalEnviroScreen for California and EJSCREEN for folks around the country);
  • Specific areas where the climate advocacy community will need further research and data in order to meaningfully advance equitable climate resiliency plans & policies (and the research areas that are already covered!);
  • What progress in California can teach advocates in other geographies about advancing equitable solutions for climate resilient communities;
  • And how and why addressing climate resilience builds into APEN and Greenlining’s Theory of Change and organizing strategies.

The last 25 minutes of the recording (beginning at 00:44:36) are dedicated to answering questions from webinar participants. You can access a copy of the slide deck by clicking the "Download File" button on this page.
